The TMCC Liberal Arts Division is hosting the second annual ArtFest event on April 15–18, 2024. This is a collaboration among faculty, staff, and students to celebrate the Arts, learn about course offerings and career options, and have fun as a TMCC community.

Each day will feature various activities, events, speakers, and demonstrations—from art exhibits, hands-on arts projects, poetry readings, dance performances, a career panel, and much more!

ArtFest and Sustainability

On Thursday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to Noon, TMCC will be celebrating Earth Day. This day will feature events and activities specially designed to honor and celebrate our earth with a focus on equity and ecological stewardship of the environment, economy, and cultures.

We created ArtFest so that the TMCC community can, together, celebrate student and faculty talent and work, learn more about Liberal Arts course offerings, programs, and career pathways, and collaborate across disciplines in a holistic, inclusive educational experience. We want to build a sustainable community around the beauty, diversity, and rewards of art in all of its various forms. 

All students, faculty, staff, and community members should join us for ArtFest! Anyone who is interested in or curious about these events is welcome to attend.

No, events are free unless there is something for sale, like the student-created ceramics pieces.

The daily activities are listed on our schedule of events as well as the college calendar. In both places, you will find a description of each event along with its time and location. 

No, everyone is welcome! Bring your mom, cousin, boyfriend/girlfriend, or whoever you want! 

Maryknoll Sanchez, a Motion Graphics student at TMCC, designed the main Artfest images featured on the webpage, posters, and stickers. She is an aspiring animator and strives to work in the television and film industry. Maryknoll is grateful to have the opportunity to design this year's Artfest posters and showcase some of her work.

Yes! We will have fun stickers, commemorative posters, and other items to help remember ArtFest. 

That is our plan! We want to make this an annual TMCC event and look forward to hearing your thoughts about what you enjoyed this year and what you hope to see in the future!

Highlights: Poetry in Motion

A collaboration of students from Fe Danger’s Graphic Communications class, and Lindsay Wilson’s Poetry 220 and Creative Writing 205. All poems featured in the video will appear in the 2024 Meadow.

ArtFest Kickoff Event: Natalie Russell and Jeff Alexander to provide opening remarks/welcome. Event to include an opening dance performance, a promotional ArtFest video, and other showcases of the liberal arts. Attendees will enter a raffle for free ArtFest prizes!

11 a.m.–12:15 p.m. SIER 108 Liberal Arts Career Panel: What can you do with a liberal arts degree? More than you think! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a documentary filmmaker? Are you interested in being a professional photographer? Have you ever dreamed about working for a big tech company like Google? Come to our panel discussion to hear from professionals who are currently working in these careers!
12:30–1:45 p.m. SIER 204 "The Longest War": Voice, Value, and Gender in the Work of Rebecca Solnit This panel will provide a presentation of, and a student-based engagement with, the written work of the esteemed US author, Rebecca Solnit.  More specifically, this panel will explore, respond to, and discuss a selection of essays by Solnit, in which she not only addresses the atmosphere of violence within which women live in the US, but also discusses how US culture can undo that atmosphere.
2–3:15 p.m. SIER 105 A Conversation with Novelist Philip Chase: Novelist Philip Chase will join us via Zoom to discuss his experience navigating the publishing industry, his decision to launch his own YouTube Channel where he discusses/reviews fantasy novels, and how the popularity of his channel led to his ultimate decision to self-publish his Edan Trilogy.

10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. SIER 108 Student Open Mic: Share your creative writing. You are invited to share an original poem or short excerpt of original prose, or read something from one of your favorite authors at a coffee house-style open mic event. Sign up to read when you arrive, or just come to enjoy the literary art being shared by others! First session 11–12:15; second session 12:30–1:45.
12:30–1:45 p.m. SIER 105 Journaling for Mental Health: Dating back to the building of the Pyramid of Giza diaries and journals have been a part of the human experience.  In this hour-long experience we will examine the history of journaling and how reflection can help manage anxiety, deal with depression and cope with the fast paced world we live in. Attendees will receive a free TMCC journal!
5–7 p.m. Student Center 50th Annual Student Art and Design Exhibition Reception and Awards Ceremony: Celebrate artistic excellence and creative expression at the Truckee Meadows Community College's 50th Annual Student Art and Design Show! Immerse yourself in a captivating display of talent as our students showcase their exceptional skills across various mediums, including photography, drawing, three-dimensional works, painting, and digital art. This milestone event promises a diverse and inspiring collection that reflects the dynamic perspectives of our student artists. Join us in commemorating five decades of artistic achievement, innovation, and the vibrant community that has fueled the growth of artistic expression at TMCC. Don't miss this unique opportunity to witness the evolution of creativity over the years and support the next generation of talented artists as they push the boundaries of imagination and skill.

9:30 a.m.–11:30 p.m. Student Center ArtFest T-Shirt Screen Printing: Come see how screen printing works and create your own ArtFest t-shirt or tote bag!
9 a.m.–Noon Student Center Turtle Island STEAM Team: Six connected tables, featuring living tortoises, integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math (STEAM) to investigate Turtle Island sustainability. Geology students present on the turtle-shaped Dandini Parcourse about columnar jointing and fractures in volcanic rock and triple point junctions in tectonics. Biology students display plastic versus alternative products and explain how plastics harm sea turtles. Dandini Parcourse rehabilitation participants show a turtle-shaped documentation map about renovation technology and engineering. Education students facilitate a turtle-shaped Dandini Parcourse art project. Math students present the hexagonal geometric shape in turtle shells with hexagon and magic-square activities.
10 a.m.–11 a.m. Student Center Campus Canvas A Dance Journey: Embark on a captivating journey through the scenic grounds of Truckee Meadows Community College, where the Dance and Theatre Department presents an enchanting site-specific dance tour. Witness a series of performances seamlessly integrated into the unique landscapes and architectural elements of the campus, transforming ordinary spaces into stages for extraordinary expression. Site-specific dance is a performance art that occurs outside traditional theatre spaces, tailored to and inspired by its surroundings. These dances are choreographed with the specific location in mind, using its architecture, history, and ambiance to enhance the movement and storytelling of the piece, creating a unique experience that blurs the boundaries between the audience, performers, and environment.
2–3:15 p.m. SIER 204 Poetry, Fiction, CNF Submission Presentation: Have you drafted and revised a short story, poem, or creative nonfiction essay? Would you like to see that work published in a print or online magazine? Luckily for you, there are more literary  journals and magazines—both in print and online—publishing writing than ever before, but understanding the process of submitting work to these journals can seem like a daunting, vulnerable exercise. This presentation will focus on publishing individual poems, stories, and CNF. Examining literary magazine and submission databases such as Submittable, New Pages, Duotrope, and Poet & Writers, this presentation will focus on how to navigate the process of finding an appropriate journal for your writing, drafting a cover letter and third-person bio for editors, and assembling a submission packet.
